FreeCAD is a general-purpose, Open Source (GPL & LGPL License)3D CAD modeler. It has SolidWorks- and Solid Edge-type capabilities. this means it can be used to model stuff for 3D printing, which is why this article is tagged that way (and awesome-tagged, because this level of functionality for FREE is awesome). Because it is free and open-sourced software, it can be modified by anyone who is handy with programming. This means it could eventually be used for much more than solid modeling (like animation), but currently its functionality is just modeling. The very lovely thing about this tool is the extensive documentation available for immediate digestion by newbies such as myself. I have a lot to teach myself before I build my 3D printer.
