Mahalo, Baby! April 25, 2012

My dear sister is about to have her mumble, mumble birthday and recently expressed interest in an ukulele as a new musical experiment.  I thought I would spring for it, and enjoy watching her squirm on the end of a ukulele string (sorry, Sis) like a pinned insect.

Seriously, ukuleles seem to have as much variety as the insect kingdom, and that’s just the low-end models (the expensive models and brands will be the subject of a more expeansive article as soon as I find that bag of diamonds to fund my research).

What I did find is a brand of low-cost ukuleles with a certain, uh, charm: Mahalo makes delightfully outre designs for their ukes, like these eye-catching numbers:

I admit I got so distracted I forgot to actually order one, so my dear sister will be disappointed on her birthday.  We regret the omission.

Exciting update:  This was on BoingBoing.  It’s not a mahalo uke.

Lyrics notwithstanding, there was a rockin’ righteous rainstorm in the most beautiful city in the world last night, replete with thunder and lightning.  This photograph was taken from five miles away, and the thunder from these strikes scared the crap out of my cats, who usually snore while I vacuum the house.

It has been said that a good meme will propagate itself and evolve to fit any available niche.  In the ecology of graphics this is most certainly true when propagated for humor:

This I spotted in front of NoiseBridge, our local hackerspace.  I swear I was only there to get dinner from the taqueria down the street.

I test (other people’s) code for a living, which often involves boring, repetitive keystrokes, mouseclicks and other user actions before producing a desired result (i.e., showing me where it’s broken).  This can be automated in Visual Studio 2010 easily, but checking that the desired result has been achieved can be somewhat more difficult or at least non-intuitive.  The process of checking a result or condition is nicely described in this video.

Cardioglossa cyaneospila was last seen by scientists in 1949 and was feared to be extinct after decades of turmoil in the tiny East African nation.  I couldn’t bear it if it was; I haven’t ever seen a purple frog before. California Academy of Sciences curator David Blackburn and Eli Greenbaum, professor at the University of Texas at El Paso, went to the Bururi Forest Reserve in the southwest part Burundi and found the habitats of the frog were still relatively intact, with populations of rare forest birds and chimpanzees living there as well.

Nobody knows why they have that extra-long ring finger (uh, on each foot).  The mystery just adds to their charm.
