Subnormality June 28, 2010

Subnormality is a fabulous comic which mixes social commentary with the flesh-and-soul-devouring hunger of the Sphinx, who is a recurring character (in fact, the only recurring character).  The author, Winston Rowntree, advertises it as “the comic with too many words”, so no screengrab for you, my pretties.  Just visit it and check out the archives.  There’s some marvelous, crazy stuff in there I promise you.

Tale of a Table June 27, 2010

We have a nice coffee table we got (on Craigslist) from a nice couple in Walnut Creek for a modest sum.  We like its moveable top, which allows us to eat TV dinners.

the table

It is kind of heavy when full, so when the stepdaughters want to play Wii Fit they have to move it and it doesn’t go well.  I was going to install some wheels to make it easier, when I found this hidden compartment:

A secret compartment

Intriguing, yes?  It had to be opened.  I cannot long gnaw at the cankering tooth of mystery, but must have it out.

bottom, brick revealed

Yes, that is a piece of cinderblock.  I gather it must counterbalance the table top when it is extended.  Not as interesting as the bag of diamonds I was expecting, nor the cash the wife suggested it would be, nor the drugs the youngest stepdaughter was anticipating.  Pity.

Oh, yes, the wheels turned out nicely.  It was my wife’s idea:

new wheels installed

Because they are set back from the outside and there is almost no clearance, they are invisible even to someone looking for them.

new wheel detail

Pretty cool, really.  look at the top picture;  it looks like there aren’t any wheels at all.

Hadler June 22, 2010

Hadler is the last name of one of my step-daughter’s friends.  She made a comic strip for him, which struck my funny bone, although I can’t tell you why.

It’s probably due to this panel:

Life's Pie Chart

This little graphic is taken from Virus Comix, which I find hysterical, insightful and dark.  My mother should avoid this too, but not because it’s crude, just DARK.

Not all Hello Kitty-themed items are Sanrio approved.  Especially the Halloween-themed ones.  I suspect serial killer modifications would be frowned on by Sanrio (if they knew).  Especially as the creator hasn’t registered with them.

Edible Dirt by Matt Rosemeir contains blasphemy, foul language, bad jokes about sexual practices, poor personal hygiene, baby hobos and uh, well, never mind.  It’s tasteless and foul.  Don’t read it.  Especially you, Mom.

Baker Beach Panorama June 14, 2010

Among the treasures of the Richmond district is the access to Baker Beach that it affords.  It is just one mile to the beach from my house if I run the long way. Click on the photo below for a panorama of Baker Beach made from twenty photographs taken in 2008.  It shows the bridge is all its glory, and the fog in its not inconsiderable glory.

I like fog.  Deal with it.

Last Sunday was the lowest tide of the year at Baker Beach, so my sainted, white-haired mother, my wife and I got to the beach a six thirty to enjoy some sights not usually available, like Shangri-La:

the first trilobite of the season,S6303038 first trilobyte of the season

the biggest jellyfish I have seen lately,

S6303055 foot-wide jellyfish

the fabled Western Passage to China Beach,

S6303051 usually underwater2

pink anemone,

S6303073 pink anenome

and caves that are usually underwater.

I see this all the time.  It’s every bit as truthful as the song “Title of the Song” by DaVinci’s Notebook, the best a capella group of Known Space.

And it has pictures.
