Monster from the Depths, or Taiwanese Snack? March 31, 2010

From Reddit.com comes a delightful post about this amazing critter. “I work for a Sub-sea Survey Company, recently this beast came up attached to one of our ROVs. It measures a wee bit over 2.5 feet head to tail, and we expect it latched onto the ROV at roughly 8500ft depth. Unfortunately, the e-mail that these pictures were attached to came from a contractor, and the ship he was operating from (and therefore location) is unknown, so I can’t tell you what part of the Earth this beast was living.” The front view is, if anything, even uglier:

”It’s a giant isopod. They get about a foot long. As far as I know, they live over most of the bottom of the ocean. I love giant isopods because my girlfriend screams every time she sees a picture of one. And yes, they are edible. They’re apparently quite the delicacy in Taiwan. To the people complaining that the OP said the one he found was two and a half feet long, the ‘about a foot’ size is only an average. It’s possible that he found one on the extreme high end of the size bell curve. It is also possible, and in my opinion more likely, that he overestimated the size somewhat. Which I think is a totally reasonable mistake to make when you see one of them for the first time.”

This is not even the best time for it. April and May are the best times, due to the number of tropicals in the arboretum. The slideshow widget I am using is from Slide.com. It was easy to use, and customizable to a large degree.

I find this completely appropriate. I know cats see the world differently from you and me…unless I’m on acid.

It doesn’t happen everywhere, but once in a while I come across really lovely mushrooms in the park. I just thought I would share.
I just think they are cool.
Beauties and the Beast March 28, 2010

In the Richmond district of San Francisco, a number of celebrities entertain the neighborhood children during Halloween at their homes, most famously Robin Williams. A couple of 49ers make their homes near his, and have these cheerleaders dispensing candy (and photo opportunities).
The fellow in the middle is my attorney. This explains a lot about my station in life, I think.

These were made with autostitch. Notice how nice the blending is.
Regrets March 24, 2010

I wish I had though of that.
I had an idea for pockets that you could add to your pants or shirt by just sticking them on (in my personal notebook/journal for several months now) and they suddenly appeared on the Intertubes. I feel so cheated…hey, wait a minute!
Since all of my good ideas seem to be getting done by someone else, all I really have to do is to imagine a utopian future, don’t you see? Since my idea of an impact suit got made (I thought of that as soon as I heard of airbags many, many years ago), how long will it be before someone produces a sofa that dispenses beer? Or the cheap unbreakable tablet computer?
FreeCAD, a 3D Modeling (free, as in beer) CAD Program March 11, 2010

FreeCAD is a general-purpose, Open Source (GPL & LGPL License)3D CAD modeler. It has SolidWorks- and Solid Edge-type capabilities. this means it can be used to model stuff for 3D printing, which is why this article is tagged that way (and awesome-tagged, because this level of functionality for FREE is awesome). Because it is free and open-sourced software, it can be modified by anyone who is handy with programming. This means it could eventually be used for much more than solid modeling (like animation), but currently its functionality is just modeling. The very lovely thing about this tool is the extensive documentation available for immediate digestion by newbies such as myself. I have a lot to teach myself before I build my 3D printer.

Jeri Ellsworth is possibly the most geeky chick in the world, for which she stands as a shining example to all geekdom, male and female alike. Racecar driver (at the tender age of seventeen), electronics engineer (self-taught), and videoblogger of AMAZING personal projects, she has been working on making transistors at home for two years (off and on). Besides these parenthetical qualifications, she is the best example of a maker I can imagine, given her (admittedly) long-term goal of printing integrated circuitry in an inkjet printer for home fabrication. I have been looking for results from her for several months now, and am delighted to come across this impromptu lecture at hackaday.com. I look forward to other great things from her.

Cute, huh? This was not posed; this guy was just taking out the trash and dropped some boxes on the way out. This is the real reason cat owners never get anything done.
No, really:
