I really feel any commentary on this epic would detract from the simple beauty that this embodies. Sometimes, words fail.

If you haven’t seen this, I recommend viewing full-sized, with the ambient music provided…or Pink Floyd.

You know you want to.

although for this guitar I am sure they would make an exception and include melody in their screaming. Though this may look like a death metal band member’s dream it’s for an actual rapper, Wyclef Jean.

My stepdaughter has been out and on her own for a year or more and very successful, too.  She took most of her stuff with her when she went, but I found this in the attic yesterday, and it brought back a bunch of memories of her teen years, when she found my electric guitar (a gift from a friend; thank you, Shabnam) and started noodling with it.  Eventually she became good enough to write songs and I was just as proud as any father could be…but somewhere along the way I bought her this:

guitar amp

Cute, isn’t it?  Battery-powered and takes standard jacks and is loud enough for practice but not too loud for Dad. Also dirt cheap and comes in lots of retro styles.

Perfect for Father’s Day–except that my kid has the guitar. 😦

My sainted, white-haired mother in concert.  She’s 85, and maybe the oldest one there.

An 88-bar spectrum analyzer using LEDs.  Very pretty. This piano was mostly unsupervised during Maker Faire 2014; it is astounding to me how beautifully the very young children attending the Faire can play, and how many gifted children are here.

This guy had tricked up the actual fountain choreography just before Maker Faire 2014 opened the gates.  Sorry about the sound; it’s just terribly loud in the Dark Room.

Lots of interesting things are happening with the Leap Motion controller.  I got a beta of this sucker and haven’t really had time to play with it (at the level I would like), but plenty of others have developed a lot of interesting software capabilities for it.  GECO here has; watch the video and be in awe.

It only needs to be made even more intuitive.

We are getting there.  Be patient.

Tim Blaine is the  guy who whomped up the preceding video, which turns out not to have been his first (big surprise.  Nobody gets that good without some practice).  Here’s his first.

Very smooth, yet complex like a good scotch.

This would have been incredible for just the singing and editing BY ONE GUY.  But there is also the fantastic lyrics.  Bloody grand stuff.

I may be the only person I know with modest pretensions to culture who has not seen Les Miserables.  Why the honk should I?  I’m (currently) happy.  Anything which translates to “the wretches” probably could be given a pass without ruining my day.  I did hear a smokin’ hot babe of my then acquaintance belt out a song from it (dramatic as all honk) some twenty-five years ago and never forgot the shivers I got from her song.  Hopefully, this little film clip does NOT have the same effect upon you, my beloved readers.  Both of you.

God, I love to hear her think out loud.  She sounds like the inside of my head, although much more cogent, inventive and rational.

Also, she doodles really well, and sings very well.  Watch the whole thing and see if you don’t agree.

Seriously rockin’ guitar solo at the end of “My Guitar Gently Weeps”.  I don’t care for Prince generally, but this is very, very good.

Mahalo, Baby! April 25, 2012

My dear sister is about to have her mumble, mumble birthday and recently expressed interest in an ukulele as a new musical experiment.  I thought I would spring for it, and enjoy watching her squirm on the end of a ukulele string (sorry, Sis) like a pinned insect.

Seriously, ukuleles seem to have as much variety as the insect kingdom, and that’s just the low-end models (the expensive models and brands will be the subject of a more expeansive article as soon as I find that bag of diamonds to fund my research).

What I did find is a brand of low-cost ukuleles with a certain, uh, charm: Mahalo makes delightfully outre designs for their ukes, like these eye-catching numbers:

I admit I got so distracted I forgot to actually order one, so my dear sister will be disappointed on her birthday.  We regret the omission.

Exciting update:  This was on BoingBoing.  It’s not a mahalo uke.
