The Apocalypse Codex, by Charles Stross July 23, 2012

The Apocalypse Codex is the fourth in the Laundry series of books by Charles Stross, and every bit as good as the first three, though not as humorous (or perhaps I am getting used to his wry take on summoning demon-spawn from the dripping maw of ichor that is Human Resources).  In this latest outing, Bob Howard (Robert E. Howard, the author of the Conan novels, was a great friend of H. P. Lovecraft, whose elder gods are the ultimate evil of this series), junior computational demonologist for the Laundry looks into a born-again evangelical intent upon hastening the Second Coming..but of what he has no clue.

Bob does.

OK, no more hints.  Well, except that this assignment is kind of a training exercise for Bob, with all the frightening implications of that statement.

Read the book;  if you haven’t read the others read them first:

The Atrocity Archives

The Jennifer Morgue

The Fuller Memorandum

These links take you to the Amazon page for the paperbacks;  all are available as audiobooks, which I also enjoyed, but are pricier.  Kindle versions of all are available.

Oh, yeah. This is a beautiful little sculpture with a purpose:  it keeps one infant from shutting down Sesame Street by grabbing the mouse on the media center and making the other cry.  From Instructables.

This photo is from an ROV in the East Scotia Ridge (at the bottom of the Southern Ocean), a thermal vent area and home to this beautiful octopus,  as well as a boatload of other, unique critters, and is part of a survey of such vents.  It looks like each vent area grows its own microecology, like this one apparently overwhelmed with yeti crabs:

The paper says as much: “Animals commonly found in hydrothermal vents of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans, including giant Riftia tubeworms, annelid worms, vent mussels, vent crabs, and vent shrimps, were not present at the Southern Ocean vents. These discoveries suggest that the environmental conditions of the Southern Ocean may act as a barrier to some vent animals and that the East Scotia Ridge communities form a new biogeographic province with a unique species composition and structure.”

Awesome.  The paper is at PLOS.  One of the authors is a distant (very) relative.
